Integrated Pest Management for museums and storage
Tailored IPM plans: periodic inspections, monitoring traps, risk mapping, staff training, emergency protocols. Compliant with ICCROM, ICOM-CC and the Italian Cultural Heritage Code.
"A good IPM plan reduces emergency interventions in museums by 70-80%: fewer emergencies, lower costs, better-protected artworks."
What it is
IPM (Integrated Pest Management) is the modern paradigm of preventive conservation: instead of acting only when infestation is evident, you monitor constantly to catch problems at initial stage. Less chemistry, more data, more brain.
A typical IPM plan includes: monitoring traps arranged on a grid throughout the museum (exhibition rooms, storage, warehouses, offices, labs, behind-display areas), quarterly inspections, digital sighting register, risk heat map, new acquisition protocols (mandatory quarantine), staff training (custodians, conservators, cleaning staff).

An IPM plan is a preferential (sometimes mandatory) condition for: ministerial accreditation, artwork loans from major museums, premium insurance for collections.
Who needs it
Public and private museums of any size, cultural foundations, corporate art collections (banks, insurance, industrial groups with corporate art), house-museums open to public, museum storage shared between institutions, permanent galleries, fashion and design archives, diocesan museums, ecomuseums and diffuse museums.
Mandatory for: who has already suffered an outbreak, is participating in a ministerial accreditation tender, wants to request loans from Uffizi/Vatican/Louvre/Met/British Museum/Getty, needs to renew insurance.
Our approach
Initial IPM audit (1-2 field days): building mapping, critical point identification (external doors, under-stair areas, basement archives, behind-display areas, technical rooms), surface swab sampling in strategic zones.
Trap grid installation (pheromone adhesive traps for flying insects, specific wood-borer traps, rodent traps where needed). Numbering and georeferencing of each trap.
Three-year monitoring plan with inspection frequency adapted to specific area risk. Report after each inspection, with historic comparison and projections.
Museum staff training (4-8h): main pest recognition, quarantine management for new acquisitions, correct behaviour during loans and temporary exhibitions, timely reporting to IPM contact.
Phone availability for emergencies (outbreak, flooding, hidden infestations discovered during a move).
