Selected active ingredients, applied with the restorer

Low-impact biocides, reversible where possible, selected case-by-case with restorers and Superintendencies. Compatibility verified with paints, gilding, polychromies, original pigments. No off-the-shelf standard treatment.

Regulatory references: Reg. UE 528/2012 (BPR) · PT 8 (preservanti legno)
● In the field

"Choosing the active ingredient for an artwork is a restoration decision, not just a disinfestation one: always agreed with the restorer."

What it is

Specialist consultancy service for choosing and applying biocides compatible with cultural heritage. When anoxia is impractical (artwork too large, tight timeline, composite materials at risk), biocide remains the option — but it must be chosen knowingly.

Choice considers: infesting species, substrate (wood, paper, fabric, leather, parchment), original finishes and patinas, treatment reversibility, desired persistence, Superintendency authorisation for listed items.

References

• EU Reg. 528/2012 (BPR) – European register of authorised products.
• PT 8 – wood preservatives; PT 18 – insecticides.
• D.Lgs. 42/2004 – Superintendency authorisation for listed items.
• ICR/OPD Restoration Charters.
• Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and technical sheets for each product, supplied to client.

Only ECHA-authorised products with properly registered active ingredient.

Who needs it

Restorers and ateliers needing a partner for the disinfestation phase, museum directors managing active infestation without closing the room, ecclesiastical properties (parishes, dioceses, religious orders) for altars, wooden statues, vestments, antique dealers and auction houses for non-sterile-origin lots.

We also intervene on: historic archives and libraries with heterogeneous materials, historic residences with original furnishings, listed foundations and private collections.

Our approach

1) Preliminary compatibility test: before applying any biocide to a listed artwork, we test on hidden portions or equivalent samples. We assess: colour reaction, possible efflorescence, pH alterations, surface texture changes.

2) Calibrated application: brush (maximum control), fine nebulisation (large surfaces), capillary injection (closed galleries). Minimum necessary quantities. Documented with before-during-after photos.

3) Coordination with the trusted restorer (yours or ours): no application without the responsible restorer's technical green light.

4) Optional residue removal phase: if the restorer requires biocide residue removal, we prepare a cleaning procedure compatible with the original finish.
